Shipping cost from China to India depends on three things: how much space your cargo needs, the mode you choose, and the route and season. For most commercial importers moving goods by sea, the choice comes down to LCL (sharing a container) or FCL (booking a full container). This guide explains how the pricing works and what drives it, so you can plan with confidence; freight prices move with demand, so always ask for a live quote before you commit.
LCL: paying for the space you use
Less-than-Container-Load lets several shippers share one container, so you pay per cubic metre (CBM) rather than for a whole box. It is the most economical option for smaller shipments.
- You pay for the cubic metres (CBM) your cargo occupies, not a whole container
- Best value for smaller shipments, typically under about 10 CBM
- Ideal for trial orders, samples and low-volume imports
- Consolidation adds a few days to the timeline
FCL: a container to yourself
Full-Container-Load gives you an exclusive, sealed container. Above a certain volume it becomes cheaper per unit than LCL, as well as faster and more secure.
- You book the whole container, whatever you choose to load into it
- Available in 20ft and 40ft sizes to match your volume
- Best value for larger shipments, typically above about 15 CBM
- Faster transit and less cargo handling
LCL or FCL: the break-even
Volume is the deciding factor. As a rule of thumb:
- Below 10 CBM, LCL is almost always cheaper
- Between 10 and 15 CBM, compare both, sometimes a 20ft FCL wins
- Above 15 CBM, FCL is usually cheaper and faster
Transit time
Sea freight from China to Indian ports such as Chennai, Nhava Sheva and Mundra usually takes 20 to 35 days, depending on the sailing schedule, port congestion and customs clearance at both ends. LCL takes a little longer than FCL because of the consolidation and de-consolidation steps.
Costs beyond ocean freight
The freight rate is only part of the picture. Budget for these too:
- Port handling, terminal and documentation charges
- Insurance, if you are not buying on CIF terms
- Customs clearance and Customs House Agent (CHA) fees
- Import duty and IGST, which are separate from freight
- Inland transport from the port to your door
How to keep the cost down
A few habits consistently reduce the total bill:
- Consolidate orders so shipments move as efficient full or near-full loads
- Plan ahead and avoid peak-season and last-minute bookings
- Choose the right mode for the volume rather than defaulting to one
- Work with a forwarder who books competitive rates and clears cargo quickly
